In neutral, the Pratt & Whitney R-2800-8 performed like a single-stage engine. The intake air is compressed by the auxiliary blower, then cooled by the intercooler, then sent through the main stage blower before entering the cylinders. When in high or low, all of the intake air is compressed in two stages. Three different settings were possible, high, low and neutral.
